Momma Mia! I Made You Some Sangria!

about

The first track from our forthcoming album ‘Introducing Malcolm Del Monte’ is Momma Mia! I Made You Some Sangria! which features the combined vocal efforts of band leader Simon M. Read, as well as his imaginary friend, Malcolm Del Monte, and partner, Kadesha Drija.

Set loosely, and barely perceptibly, during one of the many pandemic lockdowns, the song captures Malcolm Del Monte concocting an alcohol-based surprise for his new adopted family just before they wake up for work. Though initially cautious of the offer of multiple pitchers of sangria, eventually everyone jumps on board the daytime drinking wagon, just before the Zoom calls and work pretense recommence once more.

Though a sharp, melodious nugget of old school indie-pop, reminiscent of peak B52s liaising joyfully with The Wave Pictures, the track obtusely comments on the more sinister growth of binge drinking during the pandemic years. Through these wide-eyed exclamations of joy, could there be some other dark forces of social isolation at play? Almost certainly, but that doesn’t stop it happening and, if anything, just makes it all the more enticing.
