about

The second single from Quiet Marauder's 5th album, Introducing Malcolm Del Monte, Milk Tray Man features the rich, bassy baritone of Mathias Kom from Canadian like-minded, alternative-indie-DIY heroes, The Burning Hell. He is playing the part of a downbeat, introspective version of the iconic character from Cadbury's adverts from the 1960s through to the 1990s in the UK and beyond.

The milk tray man was renowned for his commitment to deliver chocolates simply because the 'ladies love it'. This would involve him shooting down airplanes, being chased by unknown opponents, and jumping from tall things, all before dropping off those truffles to a lady that he never gets to meet.

With this thought as its cue, Milk Tray Man is a melancholic, alternative-folk ballad covering our protagonist's internal deep dive into self-questioning. Why am I so invested in delivering chocolate? Who are these people that are always trying to stop me? And, do I even want to be the milk tray man after all?

lyrics

I'd rather have a frontal lobotomy
Than have this bottle in front of me
As the last means to comfort me
After one more late night delivery
It's a high risk and low reward affair
Down the ski slopes of Courchevel
I stabbed a shark, I fought an alligator
Just to get this box of Milk Tray to you

I don't want to be the Milk Tray Man
I don't want to be the Milk Tray Man
On another speedboat as the jetty explodes

It's strange how age affects your mind
'Cos I'm sure there used to be a time
Where I would see one of the ladies
Rather than an endless wave of enemies
What are they all trying to stop me for?
I'm taking chocolate to the fourteenth floor
I've dodged their bullets, I stole a helicopter
Just to get this singular box to you

I don't want to be the Milk Tray Man
I don't want to be the Milk Tray Man
Getting savaged by a wolf taking truffles to you

I don't want
To feel like I'm always
Doing something wrong
I don't want
To be forever known
As the inferior James Bond
I don't want
To dive again blind
Into those dark and dangerous seas
I don't want
The ladies to love the product
But never once love me

I don't want to be the Milk Tray Man
I don't want to be the Milk Tray Man

I'd rather have a frontal lobotomy
Than have this bottle in front of me
And for this to be
My last ever Milk Tray delivery
